Ly Dinh "Lien" passed away peacefully on July 16, 2022 in Wyoming, Michigan with her
daughter, Huyen Dang, by her side. Her husband, Vien Nguyen, and two sons
predeceased her. She will be greatly missed by her 11 loving children, 21 grandchildren
and 18 great-grandchildren.
Born May 29, 1928 in Thakhek, Laos into a business-oriented family with 5 siblings,
Lien developed sharp negotiation skills in purchasing and selling merchandise for the
family business. She was the epitome of a working mother - traveling on countless
business trips while also caring for her family. Upon immigrating to Grand
Rapids, Michigan in 1976, Lien continued to work to support and give her children every
opportunity possible. She was a leader by example - showing her children how to
succeed in their new country. Lien simply adored shopping, especially jewelry. Thrilled
for the chance to negotiate, Lien always walked away having scored an exceptional
deal for a stunning new piece. As Lien was able to devote more time to family, her
kitchen skills flourished from barely cooking to making some of the most delicious and
difficult Laos and Vietnamese dishes for all to enjoy. It was a sin to leave her house
hungry!
For those who knew and loved her, Lien was nicknamed "Her Majesty." She was the
nucleus at all of the social gatherings. Out of respect for and acknowledgment of her
importance within the circle of family and friends, people always approached to pay their
homage to Her Majesty; she loved every moment of it.
Lien was a giver; she enjoyed bestowing gifts on those she cared about. She believed
in and was a practitioner of tough love; she didn't coddle. She had a sharp sense of
humor; she was quick with a witty comeback and just as quick to laugh at one made
back to her. Lien was wise and eager to share her many life lessons. Her favorite
philosophy line, "If I don't kick you into the water, how will you learn to swim" exemplifies
her spirit. So many gifts. But, the best and most important gift she granted was teaching
her children to be good people - to work hard, take care and love each other, share,
care, and empathize for others. Lien's legacy will live on through the generations.
