Lela Kay Morgan, 75, passed away on September 28, 2026, in Douglas, Michigan, surrounded by family.
Lela was born on November 20, 1950, in Hartford, Michigan, to Grace and Ben Hiatt. She married Loyd Morgan in 1968, and together they built a life centered around family, friendship, and caring for others for 48 years. Over the years, they made their home in several places, including Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri, and eventually returned to South Haven, Michigan, where they met.
Throughout her life, Lela worked in a variety of roles, volunteered in her communities, and devoted much of her time to helping others. She and Loyd were foster parents, welcoming many children into their home over the years. In 1988, they were honored as Foster Family of the Year by Arkansas Action for Foster Children, recognizing their commitment to caring for children in need. Her home and her heart were always open, whether someone needed a warm meal, a place to stay, a helping hand, or simply someone to be there.
Above all, family was at the heart of Lela's life. She was a devoted mother to her daughters, Angie and Jennifer, always ready to offer love, support, or a helping hand. Whether it meant traveling hundreds of miles to be there for a special moment or simply showing up when someone needed her, Lela made sure her family knew they could count on her. For more than 20 years, she was a devoted stay-at-home grandma, playing an important role in raising her beloved grandgirls. She spent countless hours crafting, singing songs, playing games, and sharing life's simple pleasures with them. More than anything, she taught them to find joy in the little things and created memories they will carry with them for a lifetime.
Lela loved being around people and life's simple pleasures. She enjoyed crafting, collecting beautiful things, playing games, taking road trips to visit friends and family or simply seeing new places, and spending time with those she loved. Growing up in South Haven gave her a lifelong love of Lake Michigan. She loved swimming, boating, and being near the water, whether it was the lake or any place she could take a swim. She treasured lifelong friendships, including her special bond with Jim and Sue Bard, who had been dear friends for over 50 years. Those who knew Lela will also remember her habit of thinking out loud. Her words sometimes came out differently than intended, but those who knew her knew they always came from a kind heart. She was genuine, generous, and unmistakably herself.
Lela is preceded in death by her husband, Loyd Morgan; her parents; her siblings, Bonnie Mills, Loretta Roberts, and Melvin Hiatt; and her son-in-law, Al Remick.
She is survived by her daughters, Angie Remick and Jennifer (Warren) Sistrunk; her beloved grandgirls, Allie Remick (fiancé Jeremy Madison), Miah Sistrunk, and Trinity Sistrunk; her granddog, Gracie May; her sister, Donna Tellez; her brother, Dale Hiatt; many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
Lela will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, and the way she welcomed people into her life. She found happiness in being surrounded by those she loved and leaves behind a legacy of friendship, compassion, and countless lives made better simply because she was there.
A service celebrating Lela's life will be held at noon on October 17, 2026, at South Haven Community FWB Church, located at 1045 East Wilson Street in South Haven, Michigan.
