She was born on March 4th,1934 in Alto, Louisiana to Richard Sr. and Verna Mae Witherspoon. She accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Mount Sinai Baptist church in Alto, Louisiana under the leadership of the Reverend W.L. Rankins. She attended Grambling College studying Education. After moving from St Louis, MO in 1965 she united with the True Light Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of W.L. Patterson. She was united in marriage to Andrew Lee McCoy in 1966 and became a long-time faithful member of Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist church under the leadership of the Reverend Maurice Jones. She enjoyed singing in the senior choir.
She was a well dedicated, devoted, hard worker. She worked private duty as a nanny in East Grand Rapids, employed at welcome Home for the Blind and retired after 38 years from Calvin College as a chef alongside her younger sister Bertha. She would often boast how she would run rings around the student workers and not needing a break. After standing on her feet all day she would come home and prepare a full course meal and the house had to be spotless before she went to bed. She was always willing to teach others how to cook, show her culinary skills and open her house to others. She enjoyed cooking from scratch, window-shopping, word searches, going for rides, watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune, talking on the phone with her family and friends, and traveling in and out of the country with her daughter and granddaughter. She also enjoyed singing hymns. She loved animals, especially dogs. Some of her favorite treats were Reece peanut butter cups, caffeine free Pepsi, peppermints, Mexican pizza without the tomatoes and greens and corn bread.
She leaves to cherish her memories her loving daughter, Karen McCoy, beloved granddaughter, Ashlen McCoy and best friend Ethel Ellis of St. Louis.
