Obituary

Laura Hnyluk, a cherished soul known for her boundless generosity and spirited heart, peacefully passed away on June 14, 2026, in her beloved hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Born on September 5, 1957, Laura’s life was a testament to the power of love, resilience, and unwavering kindness.

After a long and courageous battle with cancer, Laura left this world surrounded by her family and her ex-husband and best friend, Andrew Hnyluk, the love of her life. Her journey was marked by an extraordinary warmth that touched everyone she met. Laura was the embodiment of compassion, always ready to lend a helping hand or secure whatever was needed—even if it was just a comforting hug or a patient ear to listen. She often said, “dynamite comes in small packages,” a phrase that perfectly captured her vibrant personality and the profound impact she made in the lives of those around her.

Laura’s passions enriched her days and brought joy to her family and friends. She was an avid fisherman, proudly out-fishing everyone whenever she cast a line. Her flower garden bloomed under her tender care, a living symbol of her nurturing spirit. The game 10,000 was another beloved pastime, one she delighted in sharing with anyone willing to join—passing on her enthusiasm and competitive spirit generously. And in the kitchen, Laura was known as a remarkable cook whose meals were always served piping hot, humorously warning that “you can’t cook with cold heat” as loved ones sometimes endured the happy accident of burning their mouths on her delicious dishes.

Above all, Laura’s proudest accomplishments were her children and grandchildren. She is lovingly survived by her daughter Angela Hansen and her boyfriend Daniel Abels, and by her stepchildren Tasha Hirsch and her husband William, and Andrew Hnyluk with his wife Maria. Her brothers, Bernard Hansen, Richard Hansen with his Wife Patricia and Benjamin Vane, many  step brothers sisters also stand by her side in remembrance. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren Nicholas (Emily), Amanda (Jared), Brettis, Kelsey, Kai, Addison, Cyrus, and Aiden, who brought her immense pride and joy. She was also a great-grandmother to Jacey, Oliver, Availya, and Warren, each of whom added to the brightness of her life.

Laura’s spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew her. She was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed. Among those who mourn her loss is her very best friend Suzanne Dejagger, who passed before her, and who shared a precious bond of friendship with Laura.

In remembering Laura Hnyluk, we honor a life rich with love, laughter, and the kind of generosity that transforms lives. Her memory is a gift that will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in peace, forever embraced by the love she so freely gave.
