Larry Lee Bailey, 76, of Hastings, Michigan, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2025. Born on October 28, 1948, in Battle Creek, Michigan. Larry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a proud U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam. Larry graduated from Gull Lake High School in 1967, joining the Army in 1968, and was employed for many years by Consumers Energy in Hastings.
Larry lived a life full of passion, particularly for sports and his family. Whether it was hunting, fishing, or watching his favorite teams—the Detroit Lions, Detroit Tigers, Detroit Red Wings, and University of Michigan—he was always enthusiastic and loyal. Larry was an avid softball player, all-state tennis player, avid bowler, president and member of Hastings Youth Athletic Association, where he also coached his youngest son in baseball for many years. His greatest joy came from watching his children, and grandchildren in their various sports, where he was a constant and proud supporter at every game.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Joann Bailey, his beloved sons, Larry (Amy) Bailey, grandchildren: Grayson and Linden; son, James Uptgraft, grandchildren: Sarah, Maryann, Skyler, and Hunter, and his beloved daughter, Kimberly (Kevin) Matthews, grandchildren: Kaila, Jessica and Troy. Larry leaves behind his mother, Betty Newberry and sister, Shirley (Rick) August; along with 11 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Larry leaves behind a legacy that will continue through his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Delbert Bailey, and his brother, Barry Bailey.
A celebration of Larry's life will be held at Thornapple Valley Church in Hastings, Michigan on Saturday, January 18, 2025. Service begins at 1:00 pm with luncheon immediately following. Thornapple Valley Church is located at: 2750 M43, Hastings, MI 49058.
Larry will be deeply missed, but his memory and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
