Obituary

After a courageous two-year battle with ocular melanoma, Kathy Ann Huffman went home to be with her Lord and Savior. She is survived by her husband of 39 years Joseph; her children Heather Paulson, Joseph (Heather) Huffman, Jolene (Michael) Frankey, Malia Huffman, and Nicholas (Lindsey) Huffman; her beloved grandchildren Arionna, Parker, Jordyn, Gabrielle, Hudson, Josie, June, and Jacqueline; sisters Maryann Karnitz and Judy McDonald; many nieces and nephews; and a community of loyal and loving friends. She is preceded in death by her parents Harry and June (Hopka) Kapla, sister Susie McLean, and lifelong friend Ina Castillo.

Born in Muskegon, MI, Kathy was the youngest of four girls. After graduating from Muskegon Catholic Central, she joined the Dominican Sisters at Marywood. Upon leaving the convent, she reconnected with and married her high school sweetheart, and they began their family. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, she was also the Religious Education Director at St. Robert's of Newminster, owned Small Talk clothing store, worked as a real estate agent at West Michigan Group, owned the Academy of Performing Arts, and volunteered at churches, schools, and dance studios.

Her legacy is most noted in the hundreds of children she helped raise through her daycare. Caring for kids from infancy to teenagers, Kathy helped shape the lives of her daycare kids by teaching important life lessons, providing affection and affirmation, and making everyone feel the warmth of her generous heart. She was the queen of pulling loose teeth, potty training stubborn toddlers, and helping with afterschool homework. She cared deeply for the kids and their parents, and stayed in touch with families long after their kids needed childcare. She invested in their lives, seeing them through high school graduations, weddings, and other major milestones. She earned her retirement last September.
