Obituary

Katherine “Kathy” Sue Wycoff, age 76, left us for the white, sandy-shored beaches of eternity, in the early morning on Tuesday September 1st, 2026. Known to many as ‘Kathy’, she was born June 8th, 1950, in Byron Center, Michigan to Robert and Crystal Terrell, one of five children including brother Jeff, sister Beverly, brother Larry, and brother Randy. To them Kathy was know as ‘Grace’ due to her ‘oh so graceful nature’ that led to several broken bones. She attended Catholic school where she developed an aversion to penguins. After graduating from Byron Center high school, she worked at Byron Center State Bank where she befriended Mary Jo Wycoff (Schaendorf) who told her about a serviceman (her brother-in-law) who needed someone to write to while serving in Vietnam. She was reluctant at first, but thought ‘why not’, and decided to write him letters so he would have someone to talk to besides family. That ‘why not’ turned into 55 years of marriage to the recipient of that correspondence, Ronald Wycoff. Ron must’ve loved her early on because he let her drive his most beloved ’69 Road Runner while he was serving overseas. Don’t worry…‘Grace’ put a dent in the bumper almost immediately after backing into something. After serving his country, Ron returned home where he and Kathy were wed in November 1970. Married life was filled with friends, trips up north, and by 1974 they decided to trade in the Road Runner for a baby boy, Scott (a poor investment in Scott’s humble opinion). Kathy loved being a mom, she was good at it, so they added two more children to their budding family – Shelly and Sarah. They moved their growing family from Dorr to Byron Center, and back to Dorr where they have lived for 40 years.

Kathy loved being a mom so much that when she worked at Hopkins High school, she was known to every student as ‘Mom’. To the point where her children had to call her Kathy just to get her attention. She found great joy in her work within the Hopkins Public School District, serving as an office secretary at Hopkins Elementary School, Hopkins High School, and Sycamore, where she touched the lives of countless students, families, and staff.

After retiring she enjoyed traveling, spending time with her grandchildren, watching Twilight Zone marathons, and spending time at ‘the Cottage’.

Katherine is preceded in death by her father Robert Terrell, mother Crystal Terrell, and sister-in-law Darlene Terrell. Kathy is survived by her husband Ronald Wycoff, son Scott (June) Wycoff, daughter Shelly (Jon) Pennington, daughter Sarah Wycoff, brother Jeff (Sally) Terrell, sister Beverly (Bob) Baird, brother Larry (Donna) Terrell, brother Randy (Darlene) Terrell, granddaughter Maali (Scott/June), grandson Hayden (Scott/June), and granddaughter Willow (Shelly/Jon).

Please join the family for Kathy’s Celebration of Life Open House on Tuesday September 8th, 2026, from 4 – 7pm at the Byron Township Community Center, 2120 76th st SW, Byron Center. A light dinner/snacks and dessert will be available.
