Karen Jill Warner passed away peacefully into the arms of her Lord on September 20, 2024, at the age of 60 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on October 24, 1963, in Grand Rapids, Michigan to Rolland and Mary DeRidder, Karen was the youngest of four daughters. Karen is survived by her beloved children, Stephanie (Rich) Maier, Sheena (David) DeVries, Daniel Galaszewski, Tony (Ashley) Vettese and Bruce Murphy; her dear sister, Kimberly DeRidder; her brother-in-law, Ray Bardwell; her cherished nieces, Heidi (Kyle) Zanchettin and Alicia DeKok; her handsome grandsons, Jackson, Hunter and Sam; her precious great-niece, Elise and many other loved family members. She is preceded in death by her parents, Rolland and Mary (Claflin) DeRidder; her sisters, Pam Smith and Vicky Bardwell; her nephews, Rollie Smith and Raymond Bardwell; and her cousins, Suzy and Patty Connor.
Karen was known and loved for her feisty, spunky personality and unwavering love and friendship. Her love of her children, cats, nature, and genuine care for others stands out. She was a quirky individual you could not predict, keeping people on their toes with her lighthearted and mischievous antics. Her warm laughter and playful spirit drew others to her. She is remembered for all the good times sitting around the campfire, dancing, and singing at favorite places like Amvets, her sharp pool skills (affectionately nicknamed Sharkee) and going for those long drives over the years. Her deep, lifelong friendships produced many memories that continue to bring smiles, laughter, and tears to the eyes of her closest friends for years to come.
Karen was a hard-working, dedicated person and it shone in her 22 years of service with Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital. She became a staple at the hospital starting in 2002 enriching her MFB community with pride and compassion. She was a cherished friend and confidant, training countless people, and she will be greatly missed by those who had the pleasure to work alongside her.
Karen will, most of all, be deeply missed by her children and family. She always made sure her family knew how deeply they were loved, even through hardship, and she was always striving to do what was best for those she loved. She was the first to willingly sacrifice her comfort for others happiness and wellbeing. She embodied being a one-of-a-kind person and the family will always feel the void of her absence in their earthly life.
Karen had a steadfast faith in her Lord and knew in her heart that she would join her loved ones in Heaven. Her loved ones rejoice in knowing she is at peace and waiting for them to join her again someday.
