IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joyce Ann
Oyler
November 19, 1926 – September 10, 2016
JOYCE (SHOULDICE) OYLER 1926-2016 Joyce Oyler died on Saturday, September 10, 2016, at the age of 89, two months' shy of 90. She died as much on her own terms as possible, having had opportunity to share meaningful time with her family and with her best friend while actively dying. Joyce is survived by two children, daughter, Nancy (Harry) Kopp, son Tedd (Joy McShane) Oyler; grandchildren Ryan, Allison, and Emily Kopp; brother Larry (Joan) Shouldice, nephew Steve Shouldice and niece Dottie Shouldice; and best friend, Sammie Birdsall. Born in Battle Creek, daughter of Willard and Dorothy Shouldice, Joyce married Donald Oyler in 1952 in Battle Creek. They lived in Battle Creek, MI; Dowagiac, MI; Oak Lawn Il; and Saugatuck, MI, as Don's career as a school administrator led to several moves. Don died in 2000. Joyce was a proud member of PEO for over 60 years in chapters in Battle Creek and Holland. She worked in various clerical positions as well as running the home for her family. She was glad in her life when she could enjoy bird watching, gardening, sewing, knitting, calligraphy, and listening to music. Through it all, Joyce lived the life laid out for her, financial distress as a child, a successful widowhood, great pleasure in her dogs and the greatest love for her children and grandchildren. She was private yet marvelously funny - ask anyone who knew her. After widowhood, Joyce moved to Freedom Village in Holland where she truly enjoyed the camaraderie of dear new friends, friends who blessed her last few years, including, especially Sammie. Sammie was the sister Joyce never had, other than her cherished PEO sisters. Joyce was baptized in the Congregational Church in Battle Creek in 1937, where she was an active musician. She joined First Presbyterian Church in Holland in 2010 where she found a new and supportive community of faith, a community that rallied around her in the last few years. We are certain Joyce is free now of her broken and failing body and mind.
