Joseph Michael Pakkala, born October 16, 1951, passed away peacefully at his home on June 11, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family after a courageous three-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Born in Flint, Michigan, Joe dedicated 31 years of his career to General Motors, where he served as a program manager. He was a lifelong educator, creative thinker, and passionate advocate for innovation through his work with the Mott FABLAB and hands-on learning. Joe’s curiosity, ingenuity, and ability to inspire others left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to work with him.
Joe embraced life fully and found joy in golf, fishing, traveling, hiking, and spending time outdoors. He was known for his kindness, generous spirit, and ability to make others smile. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, brother, grandfather, mentor, and friend.
Joe is survived by his beloved wife, Debbie; his daughters, Melissa and her husband Keith Hustak, and Lindsey and her husband Zach Moore, his cherished grandchildren, Avery, Sadie, Conlan, Hadley, Asher, and Bodhi; and his siblings, Mary, John, and Mark. He also leaves behind countless extended family members and friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness, wisdom, and encouragement.
Joe was the leader of our family, a devoted father and grandfather, an incredible mentor, a loving friend, and a faithful member of the Catholic Church. He embodied the spirit of sisu—perseverance, resilience, and determination. Through every challenge, he taught those around him to make every day great, to keep moving forward, and to never give up. His legacy of strength, faith, love, and laughter will live on in all who knew and loved him.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 19, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Sebastian Historic Church, 9408 Wilson Ave SW, Byron Center. Visitation with family and friends will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. A luncheon will follow the funeral.
In honor of Joe’s courageous fight with pancreatic cancer, memorial donations may be made to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. https://pancan.org/
