Johnnie L. DeShay ("John") was born on October 5, 1939, in Titusville, Florida, to Thomas DeShay and Lillie Mae DeShay. He passed away at his residence in Muskegon, Michigan, on November 9, 2025. Mr. DeShay attended elementary school in Orlando, Florida, and graduated from Jones High School in 1958. In 1959, he began studies at Tuskegee University on a baseball scholarship. Though he did not complete his degree, he remained an active supporter of the university.
He was drafted into the United States Army on November 15, 1964, serving honorably until August 1965.
On August 12, 1962, Mr. DeShay married Salome Edith Garran, and together they had one daughter, Desiree Evangeline DeShay.
Mr. DeShay worked as a professional painter for over five decades, primarily in Muskegon, MI, but also contributed his expertise to family and friends across the country. He was known for his skill in gardening, winning several community contests, and was an enthusiastic participant in competitive pool leagues, including the Budweiser Pool League and the Sunday Night Pool League, earning numerous accolades through the years.
He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Lillie Mae DeShay, and his brother, James DeShay, all of Orlando, Florida. He is survived by his daughter, Desiree E. DeShay of Inglewood, California; his sister, Dorothy D. (Samuel) Jackson of Pinecrest, Florida; several nieces, nephews, cousins; his close friend Marilee Westphal; and many friends throughout the Muskegon Heights community.
Interment will take place at Inglewood Park Cemetery. Details regarding the date, time, and location will be provided at a later time.
The family extends special thanks to Ofield Funeral Home in Kentwood, Michigan, for their services, and expresses appreciation to the Hospice Care Team from Elara, Battle Creek VA Hospital, Select Specialty Hospital, Trinity Hospital, and all nursing and medical staff who provided care for Mr. Johnnie L. DeShay.
