John W Smith, age 77, of Holland, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 9, 2026 surrounded by those closest to him.

He was born on June 4, 1948, in Grand Rapids, MI.While working for Meijer, he lived near Lansing, MI. After marrying his wife, Mary Hellen, he moved to Ionia, They then had the opportunity to move to Shepherdsville, KY where he helped open the truck/trailer maintenance department for Gordon Food Service. After retiring, they both moved back to Holland.

John worked for many years as a diesel mechanic for Meijer and then Gordon Food Service. His time at GFS enabled him to move to the Shepherdsville KY area, where his woodworking skills were well known to many. His hand crafted swings, benches, book shelves and chairs were sought after by the local community. John's sense of humor often had those around him laughing at his jokes and outlook of the world. Talking was his best skill and he chatted to anyone that stopped by. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, steady presence, and endless love for his close family.

John is survived by his wife, Mary Hellen. Daughter, MaryBeth (Andy), grandchildren, Steven (Sonja-Cooper), Michael (Jacqueline-Michael Jr), brother-in-law Robert (Laura), cats - Jax and Pumpkin and numerous other family members, friends and neighbors.
