John Robert Purins, age 78, of Grand Rapids passed away on Monday, June 25 at his home. John was preceded in death by his parents Antons and Catrina Purins and his foster parents, Earl and Catherine Spielmacher. He is survived by his wife of 42 years Carolyn; his son John II (Sarah); grandchildren Jordyn and Chase; brothers Peter Purins, and Patrick (Deanne) Spielmacher. John graduated from Catholic Central High School, class of 1959, and attended Western Michigan University. He was an avid fisherman and frequented the Muskegon River where the trout feared him. He always had a joke or two to share, enjoyed art, especially wood-carving. John was also an avid supporter of Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football. He will be deeply missed and remembered fondly by his devoted family. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, June 28 at 7 pm at Ofield Funeral Home (4500 Kalamazoo Ave SE, Kentwood) with a time of visitation from 5 to 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan. The family would like to thank Hospice of Michigan for the compassionate care they provided.
