John Poortenga, age 90, entered glory on August 9, 2018, surrounded by his loving wife and family. Born June 30, 1928, in Lansing, Illinois, he was the son of Abe and Rose (Wiersma) Poortenga. He had 8 wonderful siblings whom he greatly loved. John, or lovingly referred to as Johnny by many who knew and loved him, sold fruits and vegetables from his produce truck for many years in the Lansing area. He went on to work for Burgers Supermarket (later Key Markets) as a store manager. Later in his life he drove a truck for Carry Transit. He is most known for his winning smile, his kindness to everyone, his love for children, his outgoing personality, his genuine hospitality and his love for the Lord. He touched many lives and will be missed and remembered by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him. He is survived by his loving wife Corinne (DeHorn) Poortenga; along with five children; Cheryl (and Ken) Florey, Cynthia (and Jim) Phillips, John (and Deb) Poortenga Jr., Scott (and Linda) Poortenga, Kristen (and Art) Vos; 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Memorial services for John Poortenga will be held at 1:00 pm, Sunday, August 12 at Raybrook Chapel (2121 Raybrook St SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49546) In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Holland Home (2100 Raybrook Dr. SE Suite 300, Grand Rapids, MI 49546)
