On Friday, June 7, 2024, John Mark DeGier, age 76, went home to be with Jesus. His last days were spent at home surrounded by his loving family.
John was born to John and Latisha DeGier on June 22, 1947 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was the 3rd of 9 children.
John will be remembered for his huge and kind heart, strong faith and his ability to make everyone laugh! John loved all things sports; golfing, fishing, Lions football (good or bad), the Detroit Tigers baseball and all things Michigan. Go Blue! In the last 4 years John developed a love for dogs! Especially his little Frenchie Tyson! He said he never thought he could love an animal so much. But most importantly, John had a love for Jesus and one of his everyday prayers was for his family and friends to come to know Jesus in a very special way.
John spent 35 years driving a truck for Steelcase Inc. He was very proud to wear the uniform and drive the big "Blue and Chrome" semi. Not only did he drive for 35 years all over the country, he drove safely with no accidents. In his spare time, and in retirement, he loved spending time with family, golfing, fishing, going to baseball games and watching his favorite sports teams on TV.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Suzanne DeGier, his wife, Penelope DeGier; parents, John and Latisha DeGier; daughter, Cynthia Sundstrom; and sisters, Josie Nell DeGier, Jan Syrek, and Millie Gumbs. John is survived by brothers, Jim (Anita) DeGier and Tom DeGier; sisters, Marie DeHommel, Josie (Paul) Ritsema, and Nancy (Rudy) Mascorro and several nieces and nephews; children, Sara (Aaron) Baylis, Anthony (Mandy) Hoover, Jamie (Mark) Sanborn, Laura Hoover, and Angela Wismar.
John loved his twelve grandchildren that called him "Papa"; Avery (Sidney) Baylis, Addison Baylis, Jacob Sundstrom, Emma Hoover, Ava Hoover, Adam Hoover, Nicholas (Emily) Sanborn, Kaitlyn Sanborn, Gabriel Angoli, and Scarlett Lockyear; and three great-grandchildren; Crew Baylis, Sutton Baylis, and Warren Sanborn.
