John Oliver Carruthers, a cherished father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 30, 2024, at the age of 74. Born on January 10, 1950, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, John's life was marked by his passion, kindness, and wisdom, which touched the hearts of everyone he met.

John was a proud graduate of Fisk University, where he received his bachelor's degree, and later earned his master's degree from Calvin College. His commitment to education was evident throughout his career as a dedicated teacher in Muskegon schools, where he inspired countless students to reach for their dreams. He also served his country with honor as an officer in the Army National Guard, embodying a spirit of patriotism and duty.

Beyond his professional achievements, John was a man of many interests and talents. He spent many years as a football coach with Muskegon schools, where his leadership on the field was as impactful as his teaching in the classroom. His love for athletics continued as he coached track and field with the USAA, sharing his wisdom and fostering a spirit of excellence among young athletes. John's commitment to service extended to his involvement with the Civil Air Patrol, where he helped guide and mentor the next generation of aviators and leaders.

Winter months often found John basking in the warmth of Cancun, Mexico, a beloved retreat that provided him with relaxation and joy. Those who knew him will remember the countless stories and laughter shared during these treasured times.

John's legacy is carried on by his loving family. He is survived by his children, Kolan (Lisa) Wright, Kendra Wright, Sulean (Afton) Norris, Joshua Carruthers, and Janell (Zebulon) Bryant who will all hold dear the lessons and love their father imparted. John also leaves behind his sister, Marsha Carruthers, who shared a lifelong bond with her brother. He was a proud patriarch, surrounded by many adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will continue to be guided by his enduring influence and love. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 38 years, Susan Wright-Carruthers.

John Oliver Carruthers lived a life of purpose and joy. His passionate nature was evident in every aspect of his life, from the classroom to the athletic field, and in the quiet moments spent with family and friends. His kind heart and wise spirit will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
