IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Joe T
Raymer
January 18, 1935 – May 17, 2024
Dr. Joe T. Raymer passed away peacefully on May 17, 2024, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the age of 89. Born in 1935, in Luzerne, Kentucky to Noah and Lenora Raymer, he moved with his family to Cleveland at the age of twelve. He married his high school sweetheart, Marlene (Orwick) in 1954, and they celebrated nearly 70 years together.
Joe is lovingly remembered by his wife, Marlene Raymer, and their two sons, Tim (Dona) Raymer and Jeff (Gayle) Raymer. His legacy of kindness and wisdom will live on through his grandchildren, Andrew Raymer (Alan), Amy Raymer, Eryn (Jason) Sanford, and Ben (Jessi) Raymer, who were his pride and joy.
Joe's journey of life was marked by dedication, love, and an unwavering commitment to education. Joe earned his Bachelor's degree from Cedarville College, followed by a Master's from Eastern Michigan University. His passion for learning led him to achieve a Specialist degree from Wayne State University, crowning his academic pursuits with a PhD from Michigan State University. Joe's thirst for knowledge was only matched by his desire to impart it to others.
Throughout his career, Joe was a pillar in the educational community. He began as a teacher, touching the lives of countless students with his humor and intelligence. His leadership skills soon became evident, and he rose to the roles of Principal with Northview Public Schools, and Superintendent for White Pigeon and Rockford Public Schools. Joe continued to influence the academic world as a college instructor at Michigan State University, where he mentored future educators and leaders.
Upon retiring from education, Joe continued to support young people by serving as the Executive Director of the Arc of Allegan County. He and Marlene enjoyed spending several winters in Florida and taking trips in their Holiday Rambler RV.
Joe's interests extended beyond the classroom; he had a profound love for his family, which was the cornerstone of his life. He was always ready to give them a big hug and words of praise or encouragement. Joe raised Black Angus cattle on their property in Byron Center, and he found solace in the companionship of horses and his beloved collie, Casey.
Those who knew Joe will remember him as a man of great humor, always ready with a quip or a smile to lighten the day. His friendly demeanor made him a cherished friend and a beloved member of his community and church. His intelligence was evident not only in his academic achievements but also in the thoughtful way he approached life's challenges.
As we say goodbye to Dr. Joe T. Raymer, we celebrate a life well-lived, full of laughter, learning, and love. He will be deeply missed, but his memory will continue to inspire us, and his influence will be felt for generations to come. Joe's journey on this earth has ended, but his spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
Joe's final years were made better by the gifted and compassionate people at Clark Retirement Community in Grand Rapids. His final days were made more comfortable by the caring team at Emmanuel Hospice.
A memorial service will be held later this summer. For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to Emmanual Hospice or Humane Society of West Michigan.
