Joan Meadows, age 91, of Grand Rapids, passed away surround by family on Monday, February 23, 2026. She was the first daughter born to Jack and Cora Van Doorne in Utrecht, The Netherlands. Following World War II, she immigrated to West Michigan with her family in 1951. After taking on various jobs to help the family’s transition to a new life in the United States, Joan began her 50+-year career as an X-ray technician. She worked first at Metropolitan Hospital, where she met her husband, Ben Meadows. Three children later, Joan worked part-time for orthopedic surgeons so that she could devote herself to supporting her children in many activities and endeavors.
Smart, independent-minded and determined, Joan wielded a chainsaw as easily as a sewing machine. Her Halloween costumes were legendary, due to her perfection and creativity. And her passion for gardening delighted those who came upon a backyard bursting with blooms of all kinds. Joan’s friends and family knew she believed a cup of tea could cure many problems, especially when accompanied by any variety of cookie or a Krispy Kreme donut.
Joan lived her faith, welcoming newcomers and selflessly helping others. She was a long-time member and volunteer at Plymouth United Church of Christ.
Survivors include her children, Deborah (P. Frederick) Steketee, Barton Meadows, and Matthew Meadows (Pam Carlon); grandchildren Annalise Steketee, Claire Meadows and Benjamin Meadows; siblings William (Grace) Van Doorne, Elizabeth (Jack) Winter, and Dirk (Sally) Van Doorne; brothers- and sisters-in law, Bobby Joe Meadows and Texas (Renee) Meadows; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Ben.
Visitation will be held from 1:00pm until 2:00pm on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Raybrook Chapel, 2121 Raybrook Street SE, Grand Rapids. A funeral service will be held at 2:00pm with Rev. Peter Ross officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to Plymouth United Church of Christ, 4010 Kalamazoo Ave SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49508 or Frederik Meijer Gardens, 1000 East Beltline Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49525.
