Obituary

Charles Jeffery Comps, "Jeff", of Indian River, Michigan, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family.

He was born on January 21, 1953, to Charles and Eileen (Peters) Comps. At a very young age, he decided he did not want to be called "Charles" and for the remainder of his life was known as "Jeff".

Jeff attended Michigan State University and Walsh College, graduating with a business degree. Jeff worked on the family farm and then owned and operated his own farm before and during his college years. Prior to moving to Topinabee, Michigan, he owned and operated Chestnut Construction.

Jeff owned and operated the Topinabee Market for many years. Under Jeff's stewardship, the Topinabee Market flourished, becoming a cornerstone of the local community. He truly appreciated the community and immersed himself in community projects and events. With a generous heart, he always gave back to the community, lent a helping hand, and assisted those in need.

Jeff retired in 2016. He and Karen enjoyed traveling throughout the United States with family and their dog Kona. He fulfilled a dream of traveling abroad on a cruise from Spain to Greece.

Jeff and Karen had beautiful gardens. One year, he had an exceptionally large pumpkin patch! He was always planning what to grow next. He always said, "I grow the vegetables, Karen grows the flowers."; If you have ever been to their house in the summer, you would see an abundance of beauty. A lifelong passion, Jeff loved building and putting his woodworking skills to work. Jeff genuinely enjoyed gatherings of family and friends and the Friday night fish fries of summer.

Jeff is survived by his partner Karen Fullford, her sons Jason and Chris (Melissa), and grandsons Aiden, Dominic, and Mason, his sister Paula Comps, Uncle Mike, and the Fullford siblings: Kathy (Steve), Bruce (Deborah), Brian (Carolyn), Thomas, and their families.

Jeff was preceded in death by his parents Charles and Eileen, his late wife Bernadette, his brother-in-law Russ, and his sisters Terriann and Sandy.

A good man with a life well lived, Jeff's memory will remain in the hearts of those who knew him. His laughter, wisdom, and the warmth of his presence will be profoundly missed.

Jeff remained in charge, making decisions and planning until the very end and said, "I'll see you on the other side."

A Celebration of Life may be planned later this year.
