Jean Lockwood died August 19, 2020 in Grand Rapids, MI, at the age of 90. A beloved
mother, she was surrounded by family in her final days.

Jean was raised in Lansing, Michigan. She attended Michigan State College and graduated with a B.A. in Education.

Jean possessed a free spirit that took her from Michigan to California to work as a teacher.
She loaded all of her necessary belongings into her 1955 white Volkswagen Beetle
convertible and drove west. After several years of teaching in California, and summers
spent home in Michigan, Jean married John Lockwood. Her first child, her son James, was
observed to be a handful and she immediately retired from teaching and assumed full-time
motherhood. Her children, James Lockwood and Laura Lockwood, and her daughter-inlaw, Adele Lockwood, survive her. Jean and her husband John passed away just two days
apart.

Jean and John enjoyed travel, cultural activities, concerts at Michigan State University,
dancing, and tennis, for many years. Jean led an active volunteer life, and was particularly
proud of the MSU International Student Lending Center, which she helped establish and
worked at for decades. She enjoyed hosting foreign students at their home and immersed
herself in all that is university life.

Jean loved bridge and other competitive games, as well as the simple joys of laughter,
chocolate, and a good cup of coffee. She declined decaffeinated coffee, questioning the
point of it. Jean enjoyed music and in her day was an accomplished piano and harp player.
She delighted in homemaking, and filling her home with love, joy, and enrichment. Jean
was a two-time breast cancer survivor and was as tough as they come. Jean and John
were active members of Okemos Community Church for over 50 years.

Jean and John moved to Grand Rapids in 2010 and were able to enjoy many of the special
features of West Michigan.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private celebration of life will be held.

The family suggests that those who wish to express sympathy in the form of a donation
consider giving to their favorite charity, or making a gift to Frederik Meijer Garden &
Sculpture Park
