James C.Sloan Jr. of Grand Rapids Michigan, age 69, passed away on June 6, 2023.
On June 7th, 1953 James, who was known affectionately by those who knew him as Jimmy,
became the third of what would become eventually be five children born to Aserlee Sloan and
James Sloan Jr.
Following his graduation from Union High School in 1971, which happened to be the first school
to be integrated in Grand Rapids, MI- He went on to pursue certifications in hydraulics and
pneumatics.
Jimmy married twice- first to Carolyn Wilson, then to Deborah Sloan, whom he celebrated his
34th wedding anniversary with in March. From both of these unions, he was blessed with two
children, whom he loved deeply- Latoya and Jay.
Jimmy was an active member of his congregation, Southeast Church of Christ, where he served
as treasurer.
In his free time, he loved to fish. He was also an avid fan of music and enjoyed listening as well
as occasionally playing guitar and bass. He was a car buff and could frequently be found
reading or watching car related media. Jimmy also really enjoyed cooking and made sure that
his family and friends were fed on a daily basis.
James is survived by his wife, Deborah K. Sloan, his loving children, Latoya Holloway (Tony)
and Jay Sloan, his sisters, Regina McKinney (Gary) , Yunorma Moore (Albert), Marleen Kyles
(Sugg), and Mona Lee Sloan. Jimmy also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews, long-
time friends, and brothers and sisters in Christ.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Sloan Sr. and Aserlee Sloan; Brothers James
Hildreth and Chester Lee Sloan, and sisters; Lavada Gray and Lophia Parham.
The family would like to thank Trinity Health, the doctors, the nurses, the care team, Mary Free
Bed, Palliative Care, and Wings of Hope for the care provided through the years.
A Memorial Service will be held on June 16, 2023 at the Ofield Funeral Home, located at 4500
Kalamazoo Ave SE Kentwood MI 49508 at 11:00 am. The repast will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you to make donations to the Wings Home at Wings of
Hope Hospice, located at 530 Linn St. Allegan, MI 49010.
