James "Jimmy" Hillary DeBoer, age 84, passed away peacefully at his home in Walker, Michigan, on December 26, 2025, surrounded by the family who loved him so dearly.
Jimmy was a man of extraordinary heart and strength. Though he faced physical and mental challenges throughout his life, his spirit of selflessness was evident early on. At age 15, he worked on local farms for six years to help support his mother, Miona, as she earned her beautician's license. Jimmy and his mother remained inseparable in their home until the day she passed away.
For many years, Jimmy was a recognizable and beloved fixture on the Northwest side of Grand Rapids. Neighbors knew him as the man with the fishing pole, seen daily walking through town on his way to the river. He was a friend to everyone he passed, always ready for a chat during his daily treks to his favorite fishing spots.
His love for community continued at Lakeside Campground, where he lived for several years during the summer. There, he was affectionately known as the "Sheriff." Jimmy took his "duties" seriously, patrolling the grounds in his golf cart and playfully handing out tickets to the residents, bringing smiles to everyone he encountered.
A true outdoorsman, Jimmy found his greatest joys in nature. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.
He was also a passionate fan of automobile racing and had a deep, lifelong love for animals.
Jimmy was a very loving man with a giant heart. While he was always surrounded by a family that provided him with care and protection, it was Jimmy who enriched their lives with his pure, unconditional love. His presence was a gift to everyone who knew him.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his father, Bruno DeBoer; his mother, Miona Visota; and his sisters, Wilhelmina Alvira "Willi" Postma and Corlene Southard.
He is survived by his brother, Louis (Bonnie) DeBoer, and several nieces and nephews who will miss him and his loving spirit.
Memorial service will be Sunday, January 25, 2026 at Crossroads Bible Church 800 Scribner Ave NW, Grand Rapids, MI 49504 at 2:00 pm with luncheon to follow.
