James Harrison
Haskell
March 2, 1943 – March 31, 2026
James Harrison Haskell, lovingly known as Jim, passed away peacefully at the age of 83 on March 31, 2026, surrounded by his cherished family. Born on March 2, 1943, to Ellis and Mary Haskell, Jim was the youngest of four siblings and was affectionately called “Jimmie” by his older brother and sisters. Growing up in a small church near Wauseon, Ohio, Jim found a great love of the Lord Jesus. He worked alongside his father on the family farm, which sparked his lifelong passion for understanding and fixing things. He was admired for his integrity, humor, strength, and generosity.
Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, whose greatest joy came from spending time with his loved ones. Jim was preceded in death by his parents Ellis and Mary Haskell; brother Louis Haskell; sisters Marilyn Grime and Edith McBride. He leaves behind his beloved wife Sharon (Nofziger) Haskell; sister-in-law Luana Haskell; John and Janice Nofziger, David and Sue Nofziger, and Phil and Robin Nofziger; children Sue (Steve) Merriman of Hudsonville, Lori (Chuck) Fedewa of Byron Center, and Mike (Jenny) Haskell of East Grand Rapids; grandchildren Troy (Hannah), Trisha (Nate), Traci (Levi), Nick, Alissa, Lauren, and Claire; and great-grandchildren Tate, Jett, Jovie, and Rosie, all of whom adored him. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Jim. Summers at Rennie Lake in Traverse City, Michigan, cheering at his family’s games, and enjoying a scoop (or two) of slightly melted ice cream were among his happiest moments.
Jim married his high school sweetheart, Sharon Nofziger, in 1964. After graduating from Bowling Green State University, they moved to the Grosse Pointe area in Michigan, where Jim began a distinguished 30-year teaching career. Known for his sharp wit and dedication, he became a valued mentor to students and colleagues, inspiring many to pursue mathematics. Jim’s guidance extended far beyond the classroom. He served as a mentor and example to friends and family, sharing wisdom and offering practical advice. Jim was always ready to fix both objects and life’s challenges. Whether tinkering in the garage while listening to the Beach Boys or rooting for his favorite team, Jim brought warmth and steadiness to all who knew him.
Jim’s legacy will be his patience, wisdom, and unwavering love. He leaves behind countless memories and a profound impact on the lives of those fortunate enough to have known him.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Saturday, June 13 at 2:00 at Crossroads Evangelical Church in Wauseon, Ohio.
