Obituary

October 18, 2013 Isabel Carpenter was born in Bellfontaine, OH. She moved a short time later to Lorain, OH. She graduated from Lorain High School and later attended Spencerian Business School in Cleveland. During World War II she met Mackenzie Moss, a Chief Quartermaster in the US Navy. They were married in Boston, MA, and then lived in Seattle. When the war ended they moved to Grand Rapids, MI. There, they attended Westminster Presbyterian Church. Mack died in 1971 and after his death Isabel continued her worship at Westminster. At her death, she had been a devout member at Westminster for over fifty-five years. At her 50th Lorain High reunion Isabel reconnected with William "Bill" Barbour. After a short courtship they married and Bill moved to Grand Rapids. They were married 24 years and spent their winters in the south, anywhere near the Atlantic or Gulf Coast where they could walk the beaches and collect shells. They square danced year round. Bill Barbour passed away in January of 2010. Isabel was an outdoor enthusiast. In the winter she would ice skate on Reeds Lake. The warmer months were spent golfing, playing tennis, swimming and birding. Although Isabel often regretted not having a teaching degree, she was able to devote time tutoring adults through the Literacy Center of Western MI. One year she was recognized as a top volunteer with the Literacy Center. She also volunteered as a teacher's aide in both the Grand Rapids and Forest Hills School systems. When she was no longer able to walk, she stayed active with crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble and counting birds for the local Audubon Society chapter. Isabel is survived by her son, Bill and his wife Patty of Chicago and step children Brian Barbour (June); Jane Holder (Bob) and David Barbour (Marc). Isabel will be fondly remembered by us all. Memorial services will be held at 1 pm on November 12, at Ofield Funeral Home, 4500 Kalamazoo Avenue, Kentwood, MI. The service will be proceeded by visitation at 12:30.
