On Saturday May 4, deeply loved child of God, Irene McClain, died peacefully after a brief struggle with cancer. Irene was born in Saginaw Michigan and grew up there until she moved to Holland Michigan in the mid 1990's. She was a longtime resident of Holland, where she worked for the current Spartan Nash. Irene, moved to Grand Rapids in the mid 2000's to care for her mother in her latter years. Irene was saved at the family church in Saginaw and was baptized in the Saginaw river along with her brother Kenneth. Irene grew up in lighting years and give birth to a beautiful baby girl Chenika. Her world would be forever changed as a new young mother and somehow she made things work. Around the corner and with amazement, came Lavell who would shift her mind and her hands as she navigated a family of three. Finally, Hakim was born and the family unit would be complete. She spent her last day surrounded by family and friends. Irene McClain is survived by her children, Chenika McClain, Lavell (Ana) McClain, and Hakim McClain; her dearly loved grandbabies, Shavunta Harris, Sincere McClain, and Mikah McClain and brother and sister; Kenneth (Juanita) Augustine. Irene had a close relationship with her mother, Mary Augustine, who preceded her in death in 2007. She was also preceded in death by her siblings Benny Augustine, Gail Augustine and Irma Saulsberry. Ms. McClain was a strong woman with an outgoing personality able to strike up a conversation with anyone. Rarely at a lost for words, Irene's legacy was speaking her mind and was often referred to as "the celebrity" by those caring for her in her last days. She loved laughing robustly, teasing incessantly, Clint Eastwood (the movies, the man and the myths) and WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc). Her children fondly remember her cooking, especially corn bread dressing, and greens as well as her "special dance." Any excuse to dress up and go out was a good one. She had a beautiful heart and was fiercely loyal to her friends. A Celebration of Life is scheduled for Thursday at 4pm at No Greater Love Ministries 1204 Eastern SE Grand Rapids MI 49507. A light meal will follow the service.
