Irene Bolthouse, age 89, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday morning, July 13, 2021. She is survived by her sons, Theodore (Diane) Bolthouse, and Joel (Sue) Bolthouse, and three grandsons, Caleb, Ethan, Nathan, and step grandson Jason (Jessica) Joswick and their daughters, Halie and Bella.

Irene was born in Muskegon, Michigan, on July 7, 1932 to Peter and Sena Walhout and grew up with 7 siblings, she's survived by 3 brothers, John, Donald, and Clarence Walhout.

Irene's life has been one of ministry. She attended Moody Bible Institute. She went on to marry Howard Paul Bolthouse on June 18, 1954. They were married 58 years until Howard went to be with the Lord on December 23, 2012. Irene was at Howard's side throughout their many years of ministry. They pastored churches in Michigan and Illinois before going overseas to teach in Bible Schools and pastor churches in Zambia (10 years) and Botswana (5 years) and American Samoa (5 years). They returned to the states in 1988 and served at International Aid for several years. They then moved to Grand Rapids where Irene worked for Calvin College helping to teach computer courses with her brother, Ed, in the CALL program. She continued to work for the CALL program for many years. During this time she also worked on her violin abilities and enjoyed playing with the Grand Rapids Symphonette, as well as smaller quartets and church orchestras.
Irene and her sister, Lillian Mouw, studied together and received their Braille transcribing certificates in 1998. Irene used this ability to transcribe hymnals, Sunday School lessons and Bible Studies. She also mentored many others in getting their transcribing certificate. She loved words games, reading, traveling, getting to know new people.

Irene will be laid to rest on Friday, July 16, 2021 at Woodlawn Cemetery. There will be a memorial visitation at Kentwood Baptist Church on Saturday August 28, at 9:30am-10:45am with a service to follow.
