Obituary

Howard Joseph Bristol, known affectionately as "Papa" by his loved ones, passed away on December 16, 2024, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, due to heart and kidney failure. Born in the scenic town of Traverse City, Michigan, on March 12, 1946, Howard's journey through life was marked by dedication, service, and an unwavering commitment to his family and faith.

Howard's early life was rooted in the community of Traverse City, where he attended Pines High School, graduating in the class of 1965. His academic achievements were a stepping stone to a distinguished career as an engineer. Howard's sense of duty extended beyond his professional life as he served his country in the Vietnam War, a testament to his bravery and patriotism.

After his service, Howard channeled his skills into various pursuits, including the remarkable feat of building his own John Deere tractor by hand. His mechanical aptitude was not just a professional trademark but also a personal passion. He was the quintessential handyman, always ready to fix anything within reach, a skill that often found its place in his love for woodworking.

Beyond his tangible creations, Howard's daily routine was a spiritual cornerstone that shaped his character. He cherished his morning devotions and prayers, finding strength and solace in his faith. This faith-filled life was evident to all who knew him, as he consistently put others before himself, embodying the very essence of selflessness.

Family was the heart of Howard's world. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories with his daughters, Anna and Beth; son-in-law, Scott; grandchildren, Shelby and Kyle; "adopted" granddaughter, Jessica; great-granddaughter, Hailey; siblings, Marie, Joann, Rita, Sharon, Barbie, Carolyn, Joe, Loren, and Donald; and the memory of his brothers, John and Paul, who predeceased him.

Howard's interests were as diverse as they were engaging. He found joy in watching movies, listening to music, and most importantly, spending quality time with his family and beloved dogs. His days were filled with the simple pleasures of life, and his presence was a comfort to those around him.

As we remember Howard, we reflect on a quote that resonates with this loving man."I love you more than yesterday, But less then Tomorrow." Howard's life was a living embodiment of this sentiment, touching the lives of many with his generosity and warmth.

Papa's legacy is not only in the projects he completed or the career he built but in the love he shared and the values he imparted. The world is richer for his presence and poorer for his absence. As we say farewell to Howard Joseph Bristol, we celebrate a life well-lived, a man well-loved, and a soul at peace.

Though he has left this earthly realm, Howard's spirit lives on in the hearts of those he touched. His memory will be a beacon of inspiration, a reminder of the impact one life can have when lived with purpose, love, and a little bit of elbow grease. Howard Joseph Bristol, Papa to many, friend to all, may you rest in eternal peace, knowing that your life was indeed a success.
