Obituary

Howard Jay Block, a cherished son, brother, father and grandfather, passed away on May 9, 2025, at the age of 59, after a courageous 4-year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born on May 18, 1965, at Kingsbrook Jewish Hospital in Brooklyn, NY and died at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids, MI, surrounded by the love of his friends and family.

Howard grew up in Levittown, NY and spent many memorable weekends in Brooklyn with his grandparents. He graduated from General Douglas MacArthur High School in 1983, attended the State University of New York (SUNY) Plattsburgh, and earned an associate's degree from Nassau Community College. While in New York, he made many lifelong friendships and developed his love for New York sports teams. In 1993, he embarked on the next chapter of his life when he moved to Kalamazoo, MI to raise a family with Jennifer. He obtained an associate's degree from Kalamazoo Valley Community College, which paved the way for his fulfilling career in respiratory therapy.

For over twenty-five years, Howard dedicated his life to caring for others as a Registered Respiratory Therapist. He worked in hospitals and medical facilities throughout West Michigan and in Scottsdale, AZ, holding his most recent position with Corewell Health in Grand Rapids. His colleagues remember him as a skilled professional who brought out stories and laughter from his patients and peers.

Howard's love for music was as vast as his record collection, from Motown to punk rock. He loved to talk sports and was a huge fan of the New York Mets, Giants, and Knicks. He was an avid bowler in his early years, had a fondness for Chinese food, and valued quality time with his family, friends, and pets. After his diagnosis, Howard discovered joy in bird watching, which allowed him to appreciate the simple beauty of nature. He made special trips to spend time with his friends and family, including many throughout northern Michigan, the U.P., Florida, New York/east coast, Colorado, and a long-sought after trip to Europe.

Those who knew Howard will always remember his wit and thoughtfulness. Howard's legacy is carried on by his son, Matthew Block of Grand Rapids, MI; daughter, Gabrielle (Tyler) Rinck and grandchildren Henry and Isabel of Colorado Springs, CO; mother, Roberta (Mark) Jaffie of Boynton Beach, FL. Upon passing, he was greeted by brother, Adam Block; and father, David Block.

We will miss his presence but take comfort in knowing that he is finally at peace. Howard's influence will live on through all who were lucky enough to know him. His memory will remain in our hearts and we will continue to look for signs to remind us that he is with us always. An intimate gathering to celebrate his life and recount memories will be held in Grand Rapids, MI and he will be buried alongside his father in New Montefiore Cemetery in West Babylon, NY.
