IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Herbert
Wicks
May 25, 1943 – July 10, 2025
Herbert Kirk Wicks passed away peacefully at his home on July 10, 2025. He was 82 years old. Herb was a beloved and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was a great provider and loved his family fiercely.
A lifelong resident of Plainwell, Herb became a maintenance/pipe fitter right after graduating from Plainwell High School at Parchment Paper Mill. The mill changed ownership numerous times and through it all Herb held on and eventually retired 40+ years later.
In his younger years, he loved bowling with his wife on a mixed league on Sundays and every Thursday night on a league with the guys from work. The kids hold special memories of going with him to bowling night on occasions and getting popcorn at the bowling alley and McDonald's afterwards.
He also enjoyed going to the casino with his wife, his brother Doug, sister-in-law Marge and his son and daughter-in-law. Herb's favorite season was summertime. Backyard cookouts with his BBQ chicken or hamburgers were the hit of the summer with his family.
On a nice day, if you were to stop by, you'd find him in his cutoff jeans sitting outside soaking up the sun, even on the hottest of days, listening to the oldies station on the radio. His children will miss those special days with him at the poolside. At any gathering he would have his horseshoe pit ready to throw some shoes with anybody willing, a special memory for his children. As a dedicated father and grandfather, he also enjoyed supporting his kids and grandchildren by attending their extracurricular activities.
Herb was proceeded in death by father Robert Wicks, mother Dorthy Cooper a special stepfather Max Lukins, and his sister and brother in-law Bonnie and Bill Gray.
Herb is survived by the love of his life for 61 years, Bobbie (Smith) Wicks, whom he married on November 9, 1963; his children, Crystal Bartel, Mike (Brandy) Wicks, Cherri (Mark) Gritter, and Jennifer (Dennis) James; 13 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren with 3 on the way.
Also, surviving are his brother Doug (Marge) Wicks and sister-in-law Robbi (Skip) Drake. Cremation has taken place upon his wishes at Ofield Funeral home of Grand Rapids, MI. A Celebration of Life will be held om August 31, 2025, from 1 to 3 pm at the Gun Plain Township community center (381 8 th street, Plainwell, MI.).
