Herbert Wayne Adams, 98, loving husband and father, passed away Friday, March 31, 2023 at The Heritage in Battle Creek MI. He was born in Gobles, MI to Herbert J. and Norene (Hoffman) Adams on July 21, 1924.
Herb served as Army Military Police during World War II, which led to a lifelong career in law enforcement. During the 1950's he was Chief of Police in Vicksburg, MI, followed by Chief in Kalamazoo Township. He completed his illustrious law enforcement career, retiring from Kalamazoo County Sheriffs Department in 1994. Herb married Anna Mae "Annie" Kelly, the love of his life, on October 28, 1950. Following his Army enlistment, he was a member of the Army Reserves, followed by the Michigan Air National Guard.
Herb and Annie shared a passion for classic cars and enjoyed displaying their cars at classic car shows, driving in parades, and participating in the Lost Again Car Club. They also traveled annually to the home of Elvis Presley, Graceland. Herb loved animals and birds. A menagerie of dogs, cats, horses, parrots, cockatiels, turkeys, peacocks, and one monkey could always be found at the Adams residence.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Sheila (Sidney) Everest of Marshall and their children Leigh, Katie, Todd, and Erin; Phillip (Pamela) of Battle Creek, and their daughter Marci; Vickie (Craig) Culver of Grand Haven, and Lynn (Scott) Fitzgerald of Zeeland and their sons Kobe and Chase; 6 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and 4 nieces and nephews.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents Herbert J. and Norene, his stepfather Wilden "Rocky" Rockafield, his wife Annie, and stepbrother Robert Rockafield.
A private graveside memorial for the immediate family will be held later this year.
