Obituary

Henry Robert “Bob” Williams Jr., 83, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2026, at home in Holland, MI with his family by his side. Born on October 16, 1942, in Paterson, New Jersey, Bob lived a life defined by service, compassion, and dedication to his family and community.

Bob's early years were spent in Pompton Plains, New Jersey, where he graduated from Pequannock High School. He continued his education earning degrees at Central College in Pella, Iowa, and New Brunswick Theological Seminary in New Brunswick, New Jersey. His academic journey laid the foundation for a career devoted to helping others while living in Hoboken, NJ, Tunkhannock, PA, New Port Richey, FL and Holland, MI. Bob worked in various social service positions throughout his life, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to supporting those in need. In his later years, he found joy and fulfillment applying his woodworking skills and knowledge.

Bob was a man of many talents and passions. He loved tending to his garden, finding peace and satisfaction in nurturing life from the soil. He could often be seen riding his tandem bike around town with Joan, his beloved wife of nearly 62 years. Together they shared countless adventures and moments of joy. A lover of classical music, Bob cherished attending performances that stirred his soul and brought beauty into his life.

A dedicated volunteer, Bob gave generously of his time and energy to numerous organizations in Holland. He was deeply involved with Community Action House's Community Kitchen and Refresh Program, as well as many activities at Holland United Church of Christ. His efforts reflected a profound belief in uplifting others and championing the marginalized and underprivileged.

Bob is survived by his devoted wife Joan; daughters Dorothy (Curt) Lowry and Rebecca (John) Shumaker; grandchildren Chase (Reagan), Michael (Emily), Wyatt, and Madeline; great-grandchildren August, Elias, and Charlotte; sister Betsy Lancaster; brother Martin (Karen) Williams; brother-in-law David (Marcia) Vande Vusse; numerous nieces and nephews; a circle of dear friends; and several foster children who were touched by his kindness. His legacy of love extends far beyond these names to all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He was preceded in death by his father Henry Robert Williams, mother Harryette Williams, father-in-law Eugene Vande Vusse, mother-in-law, Gonda Vande Vusse, brother-in-law Raymond Lancaster, and brother-in-law Fred Vande Vusse.

Bob’s life was a testament to the power of generosity and compassion. A friend to everyone he met and a champion for those who needed it most, he leaves behind a legacy of kindness that will continue to inspire all who knew him.

May Bob’s memory bring comfort to those who mourn him and serve as a reminder of the profound impact one person can have on the world.
