Hattie Elsie Friar age 93 entered heaven's gates on April 7, 2016. Hattie was born on September 23, 1922 to Emil and Elsie (Hauch) Backus in Berrien County, Michigan. On April 11, 1942 she married George A. Park and that union was blessed with six children. George died in 1972 and about a year later Hattie married Robert F. Friar who died in 1985. Hattie had an unwavering faith in God and was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church. She was a tireless and active servant in church, loved singing in the choir (and would often say how much she missed that activity), led bible studies, assisted with after-service refreshments as well as funeral luncheons and another favorite activity for Hattie and many others was the apple pie making each fall that raised funds for congregational needs. Hattie was also preceded in death by her brothers and their spouses, Alvin (Joanne) and Julius (Helen) Backus and her daughter-in-law Linda. Survivors include her six children, Gerald Park, Doris (Daniel) Oaks, Sylvia (William) Spies, Patrice (Gary) Sherwood, Beatrice Park and Christine (Chad) Casey; grandchildren Michael Park, Amanda (Brian) Lloyd, Shannon Mifsud (Noel Rodriquez), Eric Mifsud, Jackson Casey and Taylor Casey; great-grandchildren, Carly Park, Dakota and Charlotte Lloyd and Sebastian Rodriquez. Other survivors include many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. Funeral Services will be held Monday, April 11 at Grace Lutheran Church, 150 50th St SW Grand Rapids at 11:00 AM with the Reverend John H. Diener officiating. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers please consider memorial contributions to Grace Lutheran Church.
