Gunn, Grace M. of Clark Retirement Community, died June 28, 2016. She had been a Clark Retirement resident for three years. Grace was born in Philadelphia and reared in nearby Southampton, PA. She earned her degree in Education from Penn State and later her MA degree from Michigan State. After college she met a young Army Sergeant from Fort Wayne, IN at a USO dance in the Philadelphia YMCA and a long and loving relationship took root. They were married in 1954. She is survived by her husband, Jim, also of Clark Retirement, her son Jack of Grand Rapids and daughter Beth of Houston. In addition to two brothers John Schilder of Hummelstown, PA and Charles Schilder of Salome, AZ a brother-in-law, John Gunn and his wife Wendy of Chattanooga.Her life was one of love and devotion to her Heavenly Father, to her family and friends and to her teaching career. Providing education and cultural opportunities to children was a continuing lifelong goal. She was an inner city Girl Scout leader early on. Following years of teaching in public schools she helped found the Specialized Language Development Center in Grand Rapids and for 21years helped children overcome their problems of Dyslexia and ADD. The last eleven years were spent as an inner city volunteer helping students advance their reading skills at Campau Park School. One of her greatest joys in life was seeing children gain confidence and overcome their reading difficulties.Grace was a member of the BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) for 30 plus years. Her keen interest in travel in the U.S. and abroad, history, Bible study and flower gardening also brought much joy. She was a member or Central Reformed Church for 58 years. A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. July 20 at the Clark Chapel, 1551 Franklin St. SE. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest a contribution to SLD READ, a 501c3 organization, located at 2650 Horizon Dr SE #230, Grand Rapids, MI 49546.
