IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Geraldine Francis
Hupp
July 10, 1926 – October 4, 2016
Geraldine "Gerrie" Hupp (Czerew), 90, of Grand Rapids, MI., passed away on October 4, 2016 after a long illness. She was born on July 10, 1926, to the late Albert and Helen Czerew. She was married to the late C. Charles Hupp, and is survived by her daughter, Judith (Rex) Larsen. She was preceded in death by her son, William (Gail) Hupp. Gerrie was so proud of her grandchildren, Audria Larsen, Lauren Larsen, William Hupp, Aaron (Kristen) Hupp, and Zachariah (Julia) Hupp, and great-grandchildren Cason Hupp, Layla Hupp, and Cohen Hupp. She is survived by sisters Evelyn (Edward) Wierzbicki and Virginia (Richard) Jenison, and many "favorite" nieces and nephews. Gerrie is preceded in death by sisters and brothers Eleanor (Stanley) Skurka, Richard (Betty) Czerew, Robert (Irene) Czerew, and Gerald (Eileen) Czerew. Gerrie grew up in a large family on Grand Rapids' west side and attended St. Adalbert's school and church. She went to Davis Technical High School, where she was lead Drum Majorette and led the band in practice down "Winchester Alley;" now remembered by her daughter, Judith, who looks out on the Alley every day from her office at Grand Rapids Community College. Gerrie graduated from Grand Rapids Junior College and became a legal secretary. Gerrie was engaged to the handsome Charlie Hupp on the front porch of her sister Eleanor's house in 1953, starting a long and beautiful marriage. She maintained the household while he worked long shifts as a pharmacist in Grand Rapids and the Detroit area, and was the bookkeeper and buyer for their drug store, Ball Park Pharmacy, in Grand Rapids. She was especially proud of her son, Bill, who became a second generation pharmacist, followed by his son, Aaron, third generation pharmacist in the family. Gerrie will be best known for her quick wit and great sense of humor that kept her family, friends, and caregivers laughing up to her last days. She disarmed young and old alike with her dry, sometimes sarcastic remarks, often unexpected, but always so darn funny. Gerrie had a keen sense of adventure, and traveled the country with her best friend, Irene, and an ironing board during WWII, working in Miami, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, before settling down and starting a family. She was an avid golfer and played in several leagues. She practiced yoga long before it was popular, learning 101 poses, including standing on her head. She loved to dance and could not resist doing the jitterbug or line dancing to whatever song happened to be playing. Her love of singing is best appreciated by several special nieces, who carry on the tradition. Gerrie had a special bond with son-in-law, Rex, who shared dinner with her almost every day in the last year of her life, making sure she had a good laugh and companionship every day. Funeral services will be held on October 10, 2016 at Holy Spirit Church, 2230 Lake Michigan Dr. NW, Grand Rapids, MI. Visitation is at 10:00 a.m. and a memorial mass at 11:00 a.m., followed by a luncheon at the church.
