IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Georgetta Ruth
Tober
October 7, 1945 – January 20, 2022
Georgetta Ruth Evans Tober, age 76, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, passed away peacefully with family by her side at home January 20, 2022, after very recently being diagnosed with cancer.
Born in St. Joseph, Georgetta attended school at Trinity Lutheran then Benton Harbor High School, ultimately graduating from Villa Maria in Grand Rapids and completing cosmetology school. Soon afterward, she met husband Richard, married in 1966, and started her family. She later lived in various southwest Michigan towns, retiring from Meijer in Benton Harbor before moving to Kalamazoo. At Meijer, she made many lifelong friends, organized Relay for Life, and most enjoyed her role as a trainer. She even taught her great-nephew to bring in amigo carts from the parking lot to plug in and be ready for customers.
After retirement, Georgetta dedicated herself to actively supporting senior and student programs and a food pantry at Oakwood Neighborhood Association, a local non-profit organization. She organized bingo, crafts, and lunches for the seniors; helped with holiday events for neighborhood students; shopped all over town to ensure selection of high-quality foods for the food pantry; and made many great friends.
Georgetta enjoyed watching her granddaughter's school plays; playing cards, crafting, and spending time visiting with family and friends; and playing online word games and puzzles. She loved watching competitive food shows like The Great British Baking Show, Top Chef, Master Chef, and Chopped; as well as watching westerns, especially Yellowstone and anything with John Wayne. She enjoyed cruises and other travel. She enjoyed nature, having a family farm when the kids were young, and later on by filling water bowls for window well toads and going mushroom hunting.
Georgetta will be dearly missed and always remembered by her loving family and friends. She is survived by 2 daughters and their families, Shelley Tober Taylor and Ellen Tober (partner Lynn); granddaughter Simone Taylor; sister Ellen Grier; many beloved nieces and nephews and their children; cousins; and in-laws; best friend Fran Hosier; and many other dear friends. Always ready to lend an ear, Georgetta lived to a high standard of love and inclusion. Everyone cherished her as a beloved aunt and grandma, even children of friends and her children's friends. She always thought of others. Her willingness to give and the laugh everyone loved will live on in our hearts.
Georgetta was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Tober; son, Richard Tober II; parents, Bill and Ruth Evans; brother, Bill Evans; and sister, Patricia Rennard.
A celebration of life will be planned at a later time and information updated once available. In the meantime, please celebrate her in a way that makes sense to you and leave a message of comfort for her family here if you wish.
