Obituary

Fred Grunewald Jr. of Saline, MI, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2022, to be with his Holy Father. Fred was born in 1924 in Detroit to Fred and Ella (Ziermann) who were immigrants from Germany. Fred was the oldest of two (sister Eleanor) who were raised in Saline, MI. He graduated from Saline High School and then served in WWII joining the Coast Guard, Seaman First Class. After the war, Fred returned to Michigan where he began to take classes at the junior college in Grand Rapids, MI and Michigan University. In 1948, Fred began working for American Seating in Grand Rapids, MI, where he met his bride, LaVon Marie DeMan, of 69 years. Fred and LaVon lived and raised three children in Wyoming, MI, Steve, Lisa and Brian Grunewald. Fred was a devoted father and Christian who enjoyed spending time with his family. He spent countless hours watching his children, grandchildren and great- grandchildren compete in sports and activities, and second to his family, was Michigan football. As a young man, Fred was able to watch Michigan football from the 50 yard line as an usher, but later he had to be content just watching games on TV, though his children recall that he often taped the games to watch them after he knew the outcome so he could prepare himself mentally - a true passionate Michigan fan. Along with family and football, Fred was dedicated to Jesus Christ and church. Fred and LaVon raised their children at Park Congregational Church where they were married, baptized their children, volunteered, and met and followed their beloved spiritual leader and friends, Reverend Dr. Phil Johnson and wife, Melody. Fred leaves behind his loving wife, LaVon, his children, Steve (and Sue), Lisa and Rande Colburn, and Brian (and Christine), along with 7 grandchildren, Eric, Ryan, Taryn (and Tony), Christopher (and Kaycee), Lauren, Reid and Ana Grunewald, and 2 great grandchildren, Jacob and Reece Grunewald. The family would like to thank Holland Home and their exceptional staff for caring and comforting Fred during his last months of life - thank you. Visitation will be held Friday, July 15 from 11:00am - noon, Memorial Service immediately following at Ofield Funeral Home, 4500 Kalamazoo Avenue, SE, Kentwood. Refreshments will be provided following the funeral service at Holland Home. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to Breton Holland Home, Grand Rapids, as they provided the comfort and caring one could only hope to have.
