Emmett Joseph Spikes, age 68, passed away too soon on Saturday, November 20, 2021, surrounded by his family at home in Kentwood, MI. Emmett was born on December 24, 1952 to Emmett and Margaret (Giles) Spikes in Holland, MI. He attended West Ottawa High School and was involved in martial arts. Throughout his life, he worked in construction and had his own business, Early Bird Roofing Company. He was also a steel erector, lawn care worker, painter, and an employee at Distinctive Catering. Emmett enjoyed reading books, riding bike, motorcycles, singing karaoke and winning first place, going to the beach with friends, tubing down the river, camping, family gatherings, movie night with popcorn, road trips in the van, working on his Lincoln, and playing with Scooter the cat! Some of his favorite experiences included attending a Tina Turner concert, trips to Colorado, going to Chicago, and hanging out with his best friend Dino (RIP). He will be dearly missed by his best friend of 37 years and wife of 21 years, Roberta Spikes; children: Melonie Marie Rau, Christopher J. Spikes, Nathanael Purdy, To'Ree Cole-Spikes, Rosie Walls, Faith Rose Marie, Anne Spikes-Cole, Alex Castillo, and Scooter the cat; grandchildren: Marcus, Nana, To'Ree Jr., Jayzon, Starr, Akil, Chance, and Crash the dog; siblings: Fred, John, Emmetta, Willfred, Penelope, Emmett Jr., Emmett Michael, Emmalene, and David (there were a lot of Emmetts in his family, that's why everyone called him "Chico"); his loved and cherished Aunty Nita; pastor Phyllis Moes; Chris' mother, Bonnie Spikes; Chester Taylor; uncle Amp; little brother, David; and good friend, Tom Doyle. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandma, Anne Spikes Coilles; sisters: Ruth and Sylvia; brother, Michael; loving aunt, Anita Spikes; and loving in-laws, Lyle and Dona Cole. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, December 7, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Brookside Christian Reformed Church, 3600 Kalamazoo Ave SE, Grand Rapids, with Pastor Paul DeVries officiating. A visitation will take place from 9:00 a.m. until time of service. After the service, please join for lunch and celebration of Emmett's life at Grandville Banquet Center, 2900 Wilson Ave, Grandville, until 5:00 p.m. Emmett's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Brookside Christian Reformed Church for everything that they have done.
