Obituary

Elizabeth Arlene (Stehouwer) DeHaan 10/1/1938 – 4/28/2023

Betty was a woman who organized her life around family, friends and home. She gladly attended the myriad activities of her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. No birthday, anniversary, or holiday passed without a timely card and call from this faithful wife, mother, grandmother, sister, friend. Her listening ear was always available. Her home was a manifestation of beauty and order, and she took genuine delight in distributing her life's goods to loved ones. Betty thoroughly enjoyed joining Gordon, her husband of 63 years, in traveling, boating, and snowmobiling adventures, but she could also face with courage the difficult times in life. Whatever Betty considered her task, she picked up and carried to the end. In her younger married life that meant, after her children were in school, first getting her GED and then attending Kendall Art School and completing an associate degree with honors. In her later years those tasks included full-time care for loved ones stricken by illness. A healthy woman for all her life, Betty nonetheless accepted a sudden prognosis of only a couple months to live with equanimity. She repeatedly expressed her gratitude for the life given her. Confident in her Christian faith, she looked with hope to being reunited with dear ones already passed. Betty was preceded in death by her husband Gordon DeHaan, by her parents William and Marie Stehouwer, by Gordon's parents Garrit and Hilda DeHaan, by her sister Carol (Stehouwer) Kirt, and by several brothers-in-law. Betty is survived by her three children—Connie (Ken) Kutzleb, Steve DeHaan, and Julie (Gary) Theule. She is also survived by ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. These include Able (Michelle) Kutzleb and Worth (Pearl Choban) Kutzleb; Matt (Bri) DeHaan and their daughter Ruby; Seth DeHaan, Katrina Albertson, and Jeremiah DeHaan; Jake (Kylee) Theule and their daughters Ellie, Alexis, and Chloe; Branden (Katie) Theule and their children Saige and Gerritt; Mitch (Hannah) Theule and their son Ridger; Ashley (Justin) Cheung and their children Grace, Jamie, and Isaiah. Betty is survived by her siblings, Joan (Stan) Peters, Alyce Schipper, Bill (Barb) Stehouwer, Esther (Chuck) Wieringa, and Jim Stehouwer, by her husband's brother Ken, and by a host of nieces and nephews. Condolences and memories can be shared at the Ofield Funeral Home website. By request of Betty there will be no public funeral service.
