Elizabeth Ann "Nay" Copeland-Betts was born the 9th of 14 children on June 24, 1949 in Guntown, Mississippi, to the late Sip "Little" and Elizabeth "Fritz" Copeland. Elizabeth accepted the Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. Elizabeth received her formal education at George Washington Carver High School in Tupelo, Mississippi. She entered into holy matrimony with childhood classmate Booker T. Betts on April 5, 1970 and relocated later that year to Grand Rapids, Michigan. In this union they raised 4 children: Veronica, Korinne, LaGenda, and Jerond. In Tupelo, Mississippi, Elizabeth gained employment at McGoye and Edison. After marriage and relocation to Grand Rapids, Elizabeth worked at Modern Coverall, and in 1972, she began working at General Motors until retirement in 2002. Booker and Elizabeth joined Mt. Zion Church of God in Christ (Grand Rapids, MI) in 1974, where she became an active member and dedicated worker in the ministry until her health declined. She served as Sunday School Secretary, Church Secretary, Women's Department, ushered and read poems. Those who knew Elizabeth knew she was an excellent wife, mother, sister, friend and a soldier in the Lord's army. She loved the Lord and was dedicated to her family and church. Elizabeth loved to decorate and beautify spaces, plant flowers and shop! She was known for being well dressed and had a kind spirit. Elizabeth is preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Coreeta Betts; granddaughter, Khandyce Howland; siblings: Jimmie B., Katie, Marcell and Robins Copeland, and Reba; brother-in-law, Joe Betts; and best friend, Nevator Walters. Elizabeth transitioned from this Earthly life to her new Eternal life in the early morning of Tuesday, January 2, 2024. Elizabeth leaves to cherish her memories and celebrate her life with her loving husband of 53 years, Booker T. Betts. In addition, her four children: Veronica Robinson (Demario) of Detroit, Michigan, Korinne Ishmel (Kevin Jamal'e) of Jacksonville, Florida, LaGenda Louis (Tramell Jr.) of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Jerond Betts (Luisia) of Austell, Georgia; eleven grandchildren: Nique and Jaymee Howland, Brianna and Demariah Robinson, Jarinn'e, Ja'Shanna, and Ja'Nel Ishmel, LaDara and Tramell Louis III, Roslynn and Raelynn Betts; seven great-grandchildren: Derrick Jr. and Dior Wilson, Nalani and Karson Love, Josiah Ishmel, Exodus and Princess Eden Newell; two sisters: Carnell Kilgo and Velva Hill (Bishop Rendell); six brothers: Evandis Copeland, Mancy Copeland, McKell Copeland (Annette), Bishop Jimmy Copeland (Paula), Randy Copeland (Terry) and Gene Copeland; sisters-in-law: Nora Jean Bovastro, Louise Robins (Shannon), Shirley Fells (Edward), Dorothy Shelby (Robert), Alma Betts; brothers-in-law: Clytee Betts, Ludie Betts (Elsie), Godson Tony Bonds, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
