Obituary

Edwin Eugene Smith, known to many as Ed Smith, passed away on October 15, 2026, in Jenison, Michigan, after a dementia related illness. He was born on December 23, 1931, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and lived a long life marked by service, dedication, and a warm presence that will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Ed was a kind, funny, and friendly man whose easy manner and good spirit left a lasting impression on family, friends, and acquaintances alike. He had a gift for making others feel welcome and at ease, and his sense of humor brought lightness to many gatherings and everyday moments. Those who knew him best will remember his steady nature, his gentle heart, and the way he carried himself with quiet dignity throughout his life.

He graduated from Davenport College with an associate’s degree in Accounting and built a career as an accountant, where his careful work and dependable character were appreciated by those around him. Ed approached his responsibilities with integrity and attention to detail, and he was respected for the thoughtful way he handled his work. In addition to his professional life, he served in the Air Force, a chapter of his life that reflected his commitment to duty and service to his country.

Ed found joy in many simple pleasures. He loved boating, fishing, golfing, and traveling, and he especially enjoyed spending time in Florida during the winter months. He also took great pride in working in the yard and gardening, finding satisfaction in caring for the outdoors and watching things grow. These interests gave him many happy hours and reflected his appreciation for nature, movement, and the beauty of everyday life.

Family was central to Ed’s life, and he cherished the people closest to him. He is survived by his wife, Audrey Smith; his daughter, Sheila Smith; his son, Michael Smith; his grandchildren, Heather Smith, Garrett Smith, and Jennifer Smith; and his great-grandchildren, Soren Passmore, Olivia Smith, and Dallas Barrientes. He treasured his role as husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and his family will carry forward the memories of his love, humor, and unwavering presence.

Ed’s life was one of steady devotion, meaningful work, and genuine connection. He will be remembered for the kindness he showed to others, the laughter he shared so freely, and the friendship he extended without hesitation. His legacy lives on in the family he loved, the example he set, and the many lives he touched along the way.

Though his passing leaves a deep sadness, those who loved Ed can take comfort in the long and full life he lived and in the many cherished memories he leaves behind. He will be remembered with love and gratitude, and his spirit will remain present in the hearts of all who knew him.
