Edward George Covington, known affectionately to his loved ones as Eddie, left this world at the age of 65 on March 14, 2025, in his hometown of Grand Rapids, MI, after a valiant battle with gastric cancer. Born on December 29, 1959, to Dorothy Jean Covington and the late Cleatus Covington, Eddie's vibrant spirit and infectious laugh brought joy to those around him throughout his entire life.
Eddie lived a life marked by hard work, devotion to his family, and a passion for the simple pleasures in life. A skilled plumber and handyman, his craftsmanship and dedication to work were second only to his love for working on cars and motorcycles—a pastime that brought him immense joy and relaxation. Away from work, he found solace in tending to his garden and creating his famous dishes in the kitchen; his cooking was a highlight, especially during the holidays, which he cherished and they were always delicious.
Despite having only completed part of his high school education, Eddie was a testament to the power of lifelong learning, always ready to absorb new information and skills, particularly if they pertained to his many interests. His adventurous soul drove him to explore new places, and he took every opportunity to travel, fish, and go boating, often accompanied by a family member or friend.
Eddie was a pillar in his family, the loving thread that connected everyone with warmth and laughter. He is survived by his doting mother, Dorothy Jean Covington; his fiancée, Darlene Ann Shaw, whom he adored; brothers Larry Smith and Ronald Covington; and his loving and only sister, Gina Pou. His loving and only son, Sean Covington, who in turn blessed him with two grandsons, Jonas and Destin Covington, and a great granddaughter. He has two stepdaughters, Kari and Liz and seven more grandchildren, all of whom he loved.
Described by all who knew him as funny, thoughtful, and loving, Eddie had a knack for lightening any situation with his humor and for showing care in the most practical ways, never missing a chance to help someone in need or offer a word of encouragement. The essence of his character is reflected in the words of famed writer, Maya Angelou: "I've learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel." Eddie indeed left an indelible mark on the hearts of many with the way he made people feel seen, heard, and valued.
Edward "Eddie" Covington will forever be remembered as a man who embraced life, loved deeply, and shared freely the innate joy he found in every day. His legacy will be carried in the laughter of his grandsons, the stories told at family dinners, and the many lives he touched. As we say goodbye to Eddie, we find comfort in knowing that his wit, his generous spirit, and his boundless love will continue to echo in the lives of those who knew him best.
Eddie's well-lived life and the joy he brought to so many. His family takes solace in the fact that while his time on Earth has ended, the memories and love he left behind will never fade. Edward George Covington's story of resilience, love, and laughter will be carried forward by the family and friends who were fortunate enough to be a part of his journey.
