Edward “Frank” Breen, 85, of Grand Rapids, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2026.
Born on May 10, 1940, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Edward Frank Breen and Margaret (Peg) Virginia Benedict, Frank was the eldest of seven children and remained deeply devoted to his close-knit family throughout his life. He is survived by his siblings: David (Bell), Richard (Carol), Gary (Kathy), Mark (Darr), Thomas (Teresa), and Cathryn (Tim) Carlsson.
Frank graduated from Ottawa Hills High School, Class of 1958, and went on to attend the University of Wyoming, where he played football. In his early years, he owned and operated several restaurants in the Grand Rapids area, creating places where people could gather and connect. He later worked for Jostens, where he was recognized for many achievements, and went on to continue his career with Gift Box Corporation.
He married Joyce Joan Jourdan Lomen, and together they raised three children: Linda (Dale) Grogan, Steven (Janice) Breen, and Stacey (Grant) Croton.
Frank’s greatest joy was his family. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Mackenzie (Victoria) Rieth, KaLeigh Breen, Nicholas Breen, Colin (Caroline) Grogan, Cameron Grogan, Olivia Grogan, Noah Croton, and Owen Croton; and his great-grandchildren: Preston, Karson, and Jackson Foight. Thank you for teaching us how to fish the memories will live on.
He is also survived by Elizabeth “Shelley” Himmelberger, a beloved relative he was fortunate to reconnect with in recent years.
He was preceded in death by his wives, Donna Johnson and Susan “Susie” Edwards. Frank had a gift for bringing people together—whether hosting cookouts, enjoying a round of golf, or spending long summer days along the Michigan lakeshore. For more than 70 years, Pentwater was a cherished place where family traditions were made and memories were shared.
A private family celebration of life will be held this summer in Pentwater.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to remember Frank for his kindness and pay that forward – nothing big, maybe something as simple as a smile or helping hand when someone needs it. Frank would smile at this.
