Douglas Stuart Thomasma, age 90, went home on Friday, August 25th, 2023.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harry and Marge Thomasma; and brothers: Tom (Ruth), Harold (Jinny), Ron (Bea), and John (Sheri).

Doug is survived by his wife, Marion (Mert); sons: Kerry, Dale (Mary), and Ryan (Susan); grandchildren: Kevin, Colin, Dan (Olivia) Weller, Ashley, Jenny, Jillian and Jimmy; and brother, Harry (Jane).

Doug was born in Chicago, attended school in Indianapolis, and spent the remainder of his life in Michigan.  After high school, Doug served in the Army between wars.  After the service, he earned his college degree from Western Michigan University, where he met his wife, Marion.  Doug and Marion were both hired to teach at Battle Creek Harper Creek, where Doug remained for 30 years.  He held many different roles for the district, including principal and business administration, as well as teaching his favorite subjects: English, math, and history. Doug enjoyed many activities during his lifetime including: golfing, bowling, reading, crossword puzzles, and travel around North America and Europe. Doug also had a quick wit and a wry sense of humor.

Doug's family would like to thank the teams at Oaklawn Hospice in Marshall and Faith Hospice Trillium Woods in Byron Center for their care and compassion during Doug's time of need.

A time of visitation will be held for Doug on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. at Ofield Funeral Home, 4500 Kalamazoo Ave SE, Kentwood, with a Celebration of Life service at 7:00 p.m.  Pastor Sean Kidd will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or Faith Hospice.
