Obituary

Douglas N. Humphries, age 102, of Grand Rapids, died in Christ on Saturday, October 4, 2025.

Doug was one of three children born to John & Mary (Mae) Humphries, on August 4, 1923, in Carteret, NJ.  He graduated from Carteret High School in 1941 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served honorably as a Seabee in North Africa until his discharge in December 1945.  He attended Washington University, St. Louis and Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA and graduated from the latter school in June of 1951.  Doug married Vera Mae Hilti of Saunemin, IL on December 27, 1948, at Bethel Lutheran Church in University City, MO.  After graduation in 1951, Doug was employed by the American Seating Company in Grand Rapids starting as a draftsman and ending as the product manager of the transportation division.  He was there for 36 interesting and challenging years.

Doug was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church where he taught Sunday school for over 40 years.  He was involved with the Boy Scouts. He was also very active with Lutheran World Relief and Camp Concordia in various roles.   After a full and blessed life, he enjoyed vacationing, golfing and gardening.  He proudly gardened at the Luther Village for 20 years.

His greatest blessing was his wife, Vera of 76 years and his family, Karen Murphy, Gary & Cynthia Humphries and Barbara Shank; grandchildren, Kate & Dale Porter and their children Maddie and Amie, Mary & Connor Sheets and their children, Violet and Elliott, Ellen & Gibson Tobin and their son Lennox, Julie & David Ward and their children Will and Ben, Kimberly & Kyle A'Hearn and their children Ariel and Aidan, and Linda & Rickey Chase and their children, Easton and Emma; half-sister, Barbara Hamilton.

He is preceded in death by his brothers, Jack & Ken; and son-in-law, Mike Murphy.

Visitation will be held from 6:00pm until 8:00pm on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Ofield Funeral Home, 4500 Kalamazoo Avenue SE, Kentwood.  Visitation will continue from 10:00am until the time of Funeral Service at 11:00am on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at the funeral home.  Burial will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.
