Obituary

Dorothy Ann (Little) Volkerding, aged 97, passed away peacefully, to be with her Lord, on December 18, 2018, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She was born on June 16, 1921 in Omaha, Nebraska, the second child of Clarence and Grace Little of Fullerton, Nebraska. Dorothy graduated from Fullerton High School in 1939, and attended the University of Nebraska-Omaha, taking a general business curriculum, excelling in both typing and shorthand, both at net speeds in excess of 120 words per minute. With the U.S. entry into World War II, she took the Civil Service Exam, and was assigned to a secretarial position with the U.S. Railroad Department in Washington, D.C. After meeting and marrying Earle Volkerding in 1944, Dorothy left public service in 1948 to raise her sons, Dale and John. Years later, she returned to the workplace, accepting a position as an executive secretary with the Ford Motor Company, Lincoln/Mercury Division, for the Washington Mid-Atlantic Region. She remained there for over twenty years, until retirement in 1979. Earle and Dorothy then retired to Cobb Island, Maryland, where they enjoyed community, fishing, crabbing, and a slow peaceful life for the next twenty years. They then made their way to Grand Rapids, MI, wanting to be close to family, especially their three granddaughters. After the passing of her husband in 2002, Dorothy continued to reside in her Grand Rapids home until her death. Dorothy was an active member of Lutheran Church Missouri Synod congregations in Washington, D.C., Oxon Hill MD, and La Plata MD, giving of her time and skills to the ladies' guilds, Children's Aid, Valpo Guild, and congregational life. She was active in Cub and Boy Scouts with each of her sons, and from their early years, ensured that the boys had a full experience of the historical events and attractions of the D.C., MD, VA region. In retirement, she became active in local politics serving in numerous capacities for the Democratic Party of Charles County, Maryland. Dorothy was devoted to her husband, sons, family, church, and community. She is survived by her two sons, Dale (Gale) Volkerding, John (Sharon) Volkerding, grandchildren Kevin (Maria) and Damon (Rebecca) Volkerding, Emily (Ryan Robleske), Anne and Holly Volkerding; great grandchildren Alexandra and Vance Volkerding, Austin Volkerding, Brady and Riley Robleske, and extended family. She is preceded in death by Earle, her husband of 58 years, her parents, Clarence and Grace (Williamson) Little, brother Donald Little, and other loved ones. The family of Dorothy wishes to extend a special thank you for the Grand Rapids MI services, support, care, and prayers of Trinity Lutheran Church, Elders' Helpers, Reliance Community Care Partners, and Spectrum Health Hospice Services.
