IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy Jean
Nelsen
September 15, 1932 – November 17, 2023
Dorothy Jean Nelsen, age 91, passed away peacefully on November 17, 2023, at The Oaks at Byron Center. She was born on September 15, 1932, in Akron, Ohio, to Edward and Mary (Snyder) Labbe.
Dorothy was a woman of many interests. She was very social and thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the many activities at The Oaks. Whether she was reading a book, playing Bingo, or enjoying a spirited game of cards, Dorothy loved being active and involved.
In her younger years, Dorothy enjoyed traveling. She loved to explore new places and meet new people, always eager for a new adventure. She was also a dedicated volunteer, giving her time generously to causes close to her heart. Dorothy was known for her hospitality, often hosting gatherings for her family and friends. Her warm and welcoming spirit made her home a favorite gathering place. Dorothy's faith was very important to her, as she was a long time parishioner of St. Mary Magdalen, including being a member of the choir, as well as being involved with the bereavement committee.
Dorothy was a devoted mother to her seven children: Bob (Cathy), Lori (Bud), David (Debra), Rick (Mary), Pat (Dave), Mike (Paula), and Christy (Dave). She was also a grandmother to 18 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, who brought her immense joy and pride.
In addition to her children, Dorothy is survived by her sister, Clara Robinson; sister-in-law, Carolyn Labbe; and her special friend, Bob Mitchell. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Mary (Snyder) Labbe; her husband, Jack; her sister, Helen; and her brothers, Chuck and Jim.
Dorothy's family would like to thank all of the staff at the Oaks at Byron Center and of Gentiva Hospice for their amazing compassion and care. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Gentiva Hospice of Grand Rapids in Dorothy's memory.
