IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dora Ellen
Hill
October 31, 1913 – May 27, 2011
May 27, 2011 Service: June 3, 2011 Dora Ellen Hill passed away peacefully on May 27, 2011, after 97 exceptionally full and healthy years. Born on October 31, 1913 in Spokane, WA, she married Gordon LeRoy Hill, the love of her life for 60 years. The oldest of three daughters, and born to parents who never met an obstacle they could not overcome, she quickly developed skills, determination and resources to create a rich, family-filled life, building on what she had learned growing up in hardscrabble times. Strong willed from birth, she did what she did regardless of what others thought. Fiercely independent, she drove until age 95. She was the consummate homemaker, with excellent sewing, knitting, cooking and housekeeping skills which she diligently passed on to her daughters. She loved and appreciated beautiful things. She was curious, loved young people, spent hours browsing the shelves at bookstores, never stopped wanting to learn, loved waffles heaped with strawberries, whipped cream and ice cream on her oatmeal. Together, Dora and Gordon raised five daughters, enjoyed summers with extended family at a Gun Lake cottage, and worked side-by-side in a small family business their entire married lives. She was a lifetime member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She will be sadly missed by her grandson, Zachary, her constant companion for the past 14 years. She was preceded in death by her beloved Gordie, whose humor and endless kindness she appreciated deeply, her two younger sisters, two grandsons and two great-grandchildren. She is survived by her daughters Barbara Dear (Ernie, deceased), Dorene Hamacher Norton (Don), Judy Mullens (Don), Sue Prichard (Hugh), Jeanine Lema (Nat), 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 3, at 1:00 p.m. in the Ofield Funeral Home chapel. Interment Rest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial to Faith Hospice, 2100 Raybrook Street, Suite 300, Grand Rapids, MI, 49546 will be appreciated. The family will meet with friends and relatives from 12-1 p.m. before the service on Friday.
