IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Donald Norman
Singrey
February 27, 1930 – January 15, 2022
Donald Norman Singrey, 91, of Kalamazoo, MI went home to Jesus early Saturday morning, January 15, 2022 with family by his side.
Don was born in Kalamazoo, MI on February 27, 1930 to his loving parents, the late Norman "Cecil" and Frances Singrey. He was the eldest child of a family of five. Don had a great childhood and was frequently found hunting in the nearest woods or in his Dad's service garage learning mechanics. Don attended Kalamazoo Central H.S. and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1948. He was a member of the 11th Airborne and the 187th Glider Infantry Regiment. During his service Don received commendations for his Sharpshooter status and an Occupation Medal of Japan. After suffering a parachuting injury, Don returned home to his life-long sweetheart Phyllis "Jeri" Behrens and they were united in marriage on March 15, 1952.
Don had a love and understanding of automobiles. He became a Master Mechanic under the tutelage of his Dad, Cecil. This passion lead him down a career path which included 20+ years with the Ford Motor Company, working for various dealerships as Sales/Service Manager. Upon his departure from Ford Motors he opened Singrey's Auto Clinic which he ran for the next 20+ years until retirement. During his spare time Don enjoyed building stock cars and could frequently be found at nearby racetracks. Don's other passion was pheasant and rabbit hunting with his beloved dogs. He had a great instinct with dogs which earned him the nickname "the Dog Whisperer". His many dogs adored him and the feeling was mutual. Don was most at home in the woods. Nothing in life was too great of a problem that a trip into the woods to run his dogs would not cure. Don loved his dear wife and their four children most of all. We will miss the funny things he did to make us laugh, making him popcorn, the special dance moves that he had, the nicknames he gave us, the sound of his whistling and all of the words of wisdom he imparted.
Don is survived by three of his loving children, Donald Singrey Jr., Tami (Tom) Spitzner and Robin (Richard) DeMink as well as his many beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren and great, great grandchildren. Don was preceded in death by his faithful wife Jeri of 68 years, his eldest daughter Jama Fox, sisters Dorothy Rothwell, Norma Bowen and Phyllis D. Singrey, his brother Elwood Singrey and his parents Norman "Cecil" and Frances Singrey.
Don has been cremated and his ashes will be interred in the columbarium at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, MI. Service date and time to be announced. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Those wishing to offer an expression of sympathy are encouraged to make a memorial contribution to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a cause dear to Don and Jeri's hearts. Service Details.
