October 17, 2014 Nelson, Donald Frank 11/14/1925 - 10/17/2014 Kentwood Donald Frank Nelson, 88, passed away on October 17, 2014. Don was born in Grand Rapids on November 14, 1925, one of 11 children, to Carl J. and Theresa Orabelle (Mixter) Nelson. He attended Davis Tech High School, then joined the Navy Seabees. Don received his bachelors degree from Western Michigan University, teaching history, geography, and drivers education at Kelloggsville High School for 32 years. Don enjoyed walking his dogs, working in his garden, and opera music. Don was preceded in death by his wife Marjorie (VerHulst) in 1972, and 9 of his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his sons Tim (Marty) Nelson, Greg (Cindie) Nelson, daughter Lisa (John) Belka, 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren, brother Robert (Patricia) Nelson, and sister-in-law Ruth Nelson. Funeral services for Don will be held on Saturday, October 25, at 12:00 noon at Ofield Funeral Home, 4500 Kalamazoo Ave. S.E., with Rev. Doug Van Doren officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Don will be laid to rest next to Margie at Chapel Hills Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Spectrum Health Meijer Heart Center. -
