Obituary

Dewey Howard Harmon, 71 of Newaygo has taken his final flight. Dewey passed away after a 6-month fight against cancer on Sunday, June 30, 2019. Airplanes were a focus of Dewey's life from birth. He was born in Fort Worth, TX shortly after his mother made a flight from Washington D.C. to see his father, who was stationed in Texas with the United States Navy. Dewey flew as a pilot in the United States Air Force in Vietnam and following his service, he continued to fly, train pilots and work as an air traffic controller. Dewey was Dad to Michael (Kristina) Harmon and Tricia (Jason) Smith who lovingly took care of him during his cancer fight. He was grandpa to Chloe Harmon, whom he adored; big brother to Larry (Sandy) Harmon and Carol (John) Reynolds and nephew to Doug (Bobbi) Carlson. He was an uncle to several nephews and a niece, friend of Bob Place and Cassie Boone all of whom are left to cherish his memory. Dewey was a caring husband to Sharon Harmon, son to Betty Leavitt and Phil Harmon, big brother to Steven Michael and Phil Jr, grandson to Dewey and Sallie Harmon and best friend to Ron Gifford, all of whom preceded him in death. For over 10 years, Dewey continued his love of flying as an active member and past president of the White Cloud Area Tail Twisters Flying Club. When he was not building or flying one of his many remote control planes, he enjoyed fishing, golf and spending time with his friends at the American Legion. Dewey's family would love to extend their gratitude to the wonderful staff and residents at Green Acres Assisted Living Community of Wayland and Faith Hospice for the compassion and care they gave to Dewey and to them. If so inclined, donations can be made to these organizations in Dewey's honor. Memorial to celebrate Dewey will be Tuesday, July 9th, 2019 @ 11:00 am at the American Legion Post #208 located at 133 44th St. Grand Rapids, MI 49548 with Military Honors and luncheon to follow. You will be soar-ly missed, Dad! Fly high and remain "just ducky"!
